Dal is an Indian dish made with lentils or split peas usually served over rice or with flatbread such as naan or roti. This dish is super easy to make and contains about the same amount of protein as dishes that include meat and has virtually no fat.

 

 

 

 

 

 Dahl

1 cup washed red lentils

3 cups chicken stock

2 tblsp oil for frying

1/2 small onion

1 tblsp garam masala

pinch coriander seed

pinch cumin seed

salt to taste

Heat oil on med-high heat until just starting to smoke. Add coriander seed, cumin seed, and garam masala and stir for just a few seconds before adding onion. Stir well to coat onion in the mixture and cook for just a minute or so until it starts to appear translucent. Add lentils and chicken stock and stir well. Bring to a boil, cover, and simmer for 20 minutes or so until lentils are cooked through and mixture appears like thick soup. Serve on rice, with naans, or rotis. Enjoy!
